South Africa's Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has expressed concern over the growing impact of xenophobic tensions on the country's entertainment and business sectors, lamenting that South African artistes are increasingly losing international performance opportunities while businesses are also suffering.

The minister noted that the country's reputation has been damaged by recurring incidents of attacks and hostility directed at foreign nationals, particularly African migrants. According to him, the negative perception created by xenophobic incidents has led to the cancellation of bookings for South African musicians and entertainers in several African countries.

McKenzie stressed that cultural exchanges and economic cooperation across Africa are being threatened by anti-foreigner sentiments. He warned that continued xenophobic attacks could isolate South Africa from the rest of the continent and weaken the country's creative industry, tourism sector and trade relations.

The minister called for unity and peaceful coexistence among Africans, urging citizens to reject violence and discrimination. He also appealed to government agencies, community leaders and civil society organisations to intensify efforts aimed at combating xenophobia and promoting social cohesion.

Analysts say the minister's comments reflect growing concerns that xenophobic incidents not only endanger lives but also carry serious economic consequences, including declining business opportunities, reduced tourism and strained diplomatic relations with neighbouring African countries.
