The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has demanded the immediate release of teachers and schoolchildren abducted by kidnappers, warning that it may embark on a nationwide strike if authorities fail to address the growing security threats facing schools across the country.

In a statement, the union expressed concern over the increasing number of attacks on educational institutions and the continued targeting of teachers and students by criminal groups. The NUT described the situation as alarming and called on security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue all victims and bring those responsible to justice.

The union stressed that the safety of teachers and learners must remain a top priority, noting that persistent insecurity is disrupting academic activities and creating fear among education stakeholders nationwide.

NUT leaders also urged the Federal Government and state governments to strengthen security around schools, particularly in vulnerable communities, to prevent further abductions and ensure a safe learning environment.

The union warned that failure to take decisive action could force teachers across the country to withdraw their services through a nationwide strike, a move that could further affect the education sector.

The development has renewed calls for stronger measures to protect schools and guarantee the safety of students and education workers throughout Nigeria.
