One Year After 272 Were Massacred, Fear Still Rules Yelewata
One year after the gruesome massacre that claimed the lives of 272 residents in Yelewata community of Guma Local Government Area in Benue State, survivors say fear, trauma and insecurity continue to dominate daily life.
The deadly attack, which left hundreds of families devastated and many others displaced, remains one of the darkest moments in the history of the agrarian community. Despite promises by authorities to restore peace and bring perpetrators to justice, many residents claim that little has changed on the ground.
Several survivors disclosed that many villagers are still afraid to return fully to their farms and homes due to recurring security threats and the fear of another attack. The community, once known for its vibrant farming activities, has witnessed reduced agricultural production as many residents remain in internally displaced persons' camps or have relocated to safer areas.
Community leaders have repeatedly called on both the federal and state governments to strengthen security in the area, rebuild destroyed homes and provide adequate support for victims who lost family members and livelihoods during the massacre.
Human rights groups and civil society organisations have also urged authorities to ensure justice for the victims and implement lasting solutions to the security challenges facing rural communities in Benue State.
As Yelewata marks one year since the tragedy, residents say the memories of the massacre remain fresh, with many still mourning their loved ones and struggling to rebuild their lives amid persistent fear and uncertainty.
